NAELP Partners with ANGLOGOLD
As part of its ongoing commitment to providing alternative employment and livelihood opportunities, the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) has partnered with AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, to launch a 10-year livelihood enhancement initiative for the youth in the Obuasi enclave. This strategic partnership focuses on three core areas: skills development, enterprise development, and fostering innovation through targeted challenges.
The primary goal of this initiative is to empower 115 young men and women with in-demand skills, support six selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through enterprise development and identify and support promising young entrepreneurs via an innovation challenge. By equipping these youth with valuable skills and business acumen, the programme aims to create sustainable employment pathways, ultimately steering them away from illegal mining activities.
115 youth from the community have already received practical, hands-on training in critical trades such as electrical work, electronics, fashion, leatherwork, welding, and fabrication.
This collaboration represents a crucial step toward sustainable economic development in Obuasi, fostering long-term solutions to unemployment and creating a pathway to prosperity for future generations.
To further support this initiative, NAELP successfully secured an £150,000 grant from GIZ. This funding will be used to provide startup kits for beneficiaries, enabling them to launch their entrepreneurial ventures and actively contribute to the local economy. The grant will also fund essential equipment for the six selected SMEs, allowing them to expand their operations and generate more direct and indirect employment opportunities for the community’s youth.
